Hello, I was delighted to come upon your excellent blog posting and information about Captain Bernard.
I'm doing research that involves Bernard's time out of the Arctic, in Los Angeles or San Francisco in 1915. He apparently, during this period, was involved with a John C. Smith in setting up an "Eskimo Village" exhibit on the pier in Santa Monica.
If by chance you know anything about this period, I'd be grateful to hear from you.
Again, great blog!

I was searching for Peter Bernard, husband of Etta M. Hurley, she apparently had 1 daughter by him, she then married Stafford Whitlam, who was a first cousin of my Grandfather. So I'm trying to fill out our Tree.
Any additional info on Peter or his daughter would be very welcome.
Thank you.

Hello There,
While working on family genealogy I found this story called, "Bernard's Wolves". Thought if you've not heard it you might be interested.
Cheers, Joan
It was not until 1943 that zoologist Rudolph Martin Anderson identified theBernard's Wolf, also known as the Banks Island Wolf, as the subspecies Canis lupus bernardi. An adult male skin and skull thewolf at the National Museum of Canada had been collected by Peter Bernard. The wolf was named after hunter/explorer/fur trader Peter Bernard and his nephew Joseph Bernard. HABITATHABITAT The Bernard's Wolves reside on Banks Island in the Northwest Territories of Canada. They were previously widespread in the archipelago Victoria, but were annihilated by excessive hunting.
CHARACTERISTICS
They are large wolves, standing up to 4 feet tall and 6 feet long from tip of nose to end of tail. They have long thick white hair with a black stripe down their spine. They can weigh anywhere from 60 to 110 pounds.
STATUS
The last Bernard's Wolves seen on Banks Island were in the northwestern regions. During a survey of the southern region of the island taken in March of 1993, no wolves were found, nor were any fresh wolf kills nor wolf tracks seen. The wolves on Victoria Island were killed off between 1918 and 1952.

Yes I agree. I am the genealogist of my family. Researching and recording all I can find about my ancestors is so rewarding & fascinating to me. I hope I can pass down all I've accumulating to someone who treasures our history as much as I . Someone who will keep these records safe and in time pass them on.
Having once been married to Smoky Bernard's nephew Jim MacMaster for 23 years I was enchanted by the stories I heard about Joseph (Eskimo Joe) Bernard and often search for new updates about his life. I am grateful for posts such as these.

Name: "Eric Bernard Loth"Grateful to read this page. Joe Bernard was cousin to my great grandfather, also Joseph Bernard, Lieutenant Governor of PEI 1945-1950. We get back to PEI every couple years for a reunion. Would love to get up to Cordova to visit. Are there any Bernard's still there?
